Off to Hong Kong
Due to the vagaries of the China tourist visa, I have to leave the country every 2 months. So I’m off to Hong Kong for a week. Hopefully I’ll be able to get a longer term visa there, this site makes it sound possible, even easy, to get a 6-month multiple-entry visa for China in Hong Kong.
I don’t think my China cell phone will work there, but my old US number has now been ported to the internet. So if anyone calls my old US number and leaves a message, it’ll be sent to me via email. Pretty cool that.

I linked here from a post of yours on slashdot where you write about having upgraded the firmware on your Andus Resound mp3 player. Since Andus/Voigo/Frontel seems to be out of business, the firmware update seems not to be available. Thus, I have not been able to find the firmware to update my device to allow my mp3 player to be update to a generic USb storage device. Do you have the firmware available somewhere where it can be downloaded, etc.? I would be very grateful for your help.
Thanks, Leo

Hi Leo,
Your comment makes me smile, because it reminds me of all the times I’ve tried to hunt down drivers for ancient devices. I would always end up emailing people who’d commented in discussion forums or usenet several years previously and would never hear back from them.
I wish I still had the installer for the firmware that causes the player to work as a generic USB storage device.
I did a little bit of google searching and found the following messages that might help you:
This post contains all the instructions for installing the firmware:
http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/arcmessageview.php?start=20&catid=18&threadid=212060
This just might be the firmware — or it might not:
http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=395411
Here’s a company that still makes mp3 players based on that chip I think:
http://www.vintion.com.cn/vin2001cn/support/supportcontent.asp?id=48
Hmmm, here’s a page with downloadable firmware (I think) for a “SigmaTelMSCN”, which sounds like it’s on the right track:
http://www.penpower.com.tw/dl/driver.asp
As always, installing firmware can make your device unusable — especially if you install firmware not made for your particular device. I can’t guarantee that any of these links are to the right thing, although the fatwallet forum discussion is the exact information I used when flashing the firmware in my andus resound so long ago.
Good luck!
